Exploring the archive: an overview

New! Many thanks to Edward C. Wilde, Esq., who has transcribed a large portion of John Ball's treatise on meditation. This is now available from the Authors index.

This portion of the site allows you to explore Puritan meditation for yourself, and to hear the original authors explain the discipline in their own words.

Before entering the archive, most users will find it helpful to become familiar with the major themes and ideas that occur often within Puritan writings on meditation. The Understanding Puritan Meditation portion of this site provides a general overview of these themes, as well as a number of other articles.

The Authors index directs users to the works of nine Puritan authors whose work appears in this archive. Each author's main page has a description of the author and the work(s) by him on meditation, and contains links to a transcription of some or all of these works.

The Topical index assists users in locating specific portions of works that are excellent on a particular topic.

Meditation is a pure and rational converse with God,
it is the flower and height of Consecreated Reason. -T. Manton
