Backgrounds to Puritan meditation

This section of the site provides information to broaden perspectives on seventeenth century English Puritan meditation. It is important to understand that, rather than being a discipline unique to Puritanism, Puritan meditation builds strongly and clearly on biblical and on orthodox doctrinal positions. In addition, a student of Puritan meditation must be familiar with the numerous and tumultuous religious, social and political developments that influenced the lives and work of those who wrote about meditation.

To assist with such understanding, the following tools are available:

An overview of the biblical bases for meditation.

An exhibit showing connections between and major life developments of Puritan authors of works on meditation.

A timeline depicting selected events in early modern England's political and religious history, relevant dates for the Puritan authors of works on meditation, and publication years of the works themselves.

There is an art, a divine skill of meditation,
which none can teach but God alone: Would you have it, go then to God... -W. Bridge
