Each of the sources used in constructing the argument and some that have provided contextual information for this project are included in this digital archive. Documents consist primarily of newspaper and periodical articles from all over the country to illustrate public perception concerning Utah affairs in the mid-1850s. A key way to understand the Utah Expedition comes through this public discourse. The press had tremendous influence in shaping public opinion and revealing what people thought and how that shaped their actions. Historians suggest that practically everybody subscribed to newspapers or periodicals and they read them avidly and frequently, especially when discussing the West, during the middle 1800s. Newspapers remain prime sources for discovering and understanding history. In addition, government proclamations are included in this source base. The digital source base will continue to grow as this project develops.
